VMware Exec: Most Of Our Software-Defined Networking Customers Are Running On Cisco Gear

VMware and Cisco Systems are battling for the hearts and minds of software-defined networking customers, and that competition is getting fierce.

But according to Dominick Delfino, vice president of engineering systems worldwide VMware, a significant majority of customers using virtualization provider SDN its software, known as NSX in Cisco networking equipment.

"Frankly, probably about three quarters of our customers are running [NSX] on top of a Cisco network are now the market leader," said Delfino CRN in an interview earlier this month.
VMware Delfino joined last September after 14 years of Cisco, who helped promote their competing technology known as SDN Centric Application Infrastructure (ACI). It was a popular figure in the Cisco channel, and is one of the managers responsible for the VMware partner on board with the NSX.

Cisco ACI includes a combination of software, controller Nexus 9000 switches and infrastructure policy (APIC) application that manages, creates, stores and applies the network policy.VMware NSX is a software technology only, and Delfino said that this makes it more attractive for customers, because they can operate without changes to their existing networks.

"We can put NSX on top of Cisco and customers may leverage virtualization in the context of network automation network or infrastructure-as-a-Service or private cloud and Platform-as-a-Service and cloud development" Delfino said.Ron linen, vice August Schell, a partner of VMware based on Md. Rockville ,, said that many of his customers are buying Cisco Nexus 9000 Series switches and running NSX in them instead of ACI.

"Cisco 9000 switch is a great product that is a reasonable price for Cisco gear," said Lino, whose company was also a partner of Nicira, SDN startup acquired VMware in 2012 and became NSX.NSX comes with "micro-segmentation" within VMware to network security is provided by the traffic control "East-West" between servers in a data center. This is another great advantage for VMware, as Delfino.
"NSX actually offers more investment protection for infrastructure of what it does, if they decide to switch to alternative technologies exist," said Delfino.Cisco, of course, has a different opinion. CEO Chuck Robbins, in an interview with CRN last month, said the ACI is best for businesses because it can scale beyond the data center and the rest of the network.
"In fact, we can put in ICA, we are able to implement it, can lead to scale and do not believe that VMware has been shown to have that ability," said Robbins CRN.

Although Cisco VMware NSX front ACI has become a kind of religious debate, most industry observers believe that there will be plenty of space in the global market SDN both do well with technology. That said, some of the partners working with VMware and Cisco believe NSX has the advantage at this stage of the game which is not surprising because VMware was the first to bring its product to market.

"I'm pretty sure that VMware can produce a number of large customers NSX scale production run in the data center. I'm not positive how Cisco could produce so much," said a solution provider executive who works with suppliers, who He declined to be identified.Dolphin, which will reach its first anniversary of VMware at the end of the month, told RCN that is based on the ability of VMware NSX to continue to build a force in SDN.

"A major attraction of VMware is that the culture is very, very targeted engineering," said Delfino. "When you work in sales, or working in systems engineering, the end of the day, you must go to the market on the back of the product."You can only do sound so great from a marketing perspective or from a marketing perspective, but does not work so great as it seems, is not receiving any adoption," said Delfino.
