What's New in VMware Certification Programs?

VMware certificate holders should get ready to do their homework. Nearly all VMware certification programs include new, more strenuous requirements.

The most important change to the revamped VMware certification program is the introduction of the VMware Certified Implementation Expert level, which replaces the VMware Certified Advanced Professional level.

The VMware Certified Implementation Expert (VCIX) level tests you on the skills necessary to create product-level designs and deploy the design components. To qualify for VCIX certification, you must already be a VMware Certified Professional (VCP) and pass two exams one focused on design and the other on administration. However, VMware shortened the certification exams from 4 hours to 2 hours.

In addition, the VCP certification also underwent a few changes. You must now pass two exams, rather than just one. The first is the vSphere 6 Foundations exam that validates your understanding of and ability to deploy vSphere. The second is specific to your area of focus. For example, if you're on the Data Center Virtualization track, you must complete the Data Center Virtualization exam. In addition, the VCP level requires that you complete a training course, such as vSphere: Optimize & Scale.
You will also find changes over Certified Design Expert (VCDX). For example, those who want to earn additional certification at this level after winning the first would be enough to introduce a new model that meets the requirements of certification. They should not be subjected to an additional defense. However, the level VCDX you must have a certification VCIX. This means that if you have a VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP) certification, which is not eligible for the course VCDX. First, you must take one of the exams VCIX update VCIX VCAP certification.

In addition, VMware is dropping some tests and the addition of others, while updating its course offerings. Good news: the VMware Certified Associate level appears nearly unchanged. Of course, all this may seem overwhelming, and some of the information is still in progress or incomplete, so it is worth checking with VMware to further changes before seeking certification. On the positive side, VMware has created a state elite for completing multiple certifications for VCP, VCIX or VCDX level.

VMware Exec: Most Of Our Software-Defined Networking Customers Are Running On Cisco Gear

 VMware and Cisco Systems are battling for the hearts and minds of software-defined networking customers, and that competition is getting fierce.

But according to Dominick Delfino, vice president of engineering systems worldwide VMware, a significant majority of customers using virtualization provider SDN its software, known as NSX in Cisco networking equipment.

"Frankly, probably about three quarters of our customers are running [NSX] on top of a Cisco network are now the market leader," said Delfino CRN in an interview earlier this month.
VMware Delfino joined last September after 14 years of Cisco, who helped promote their competing technology known as SDN Centric Application Infrastructure (ACI). It was a popular figure in the Cisco channel, and is one of the managers responsible for the VMware partner on board with the NSX.

Cisco ACI includes a combination of software, controller Nexus 9000 switches and infrastructure policy (APIC) application that manages, creates, stores and applies the network policy.VMware NSX is a software technology only, and Delfino said that this makes it more attractive for customers, because they can operate without changes to their existing networks.

"We can put NSX on top of Cisco and customers may leverage virtualization in the context of network automation network or infrastructure-as-a-Service or private cloud and Platform-as-a-Service and cloud development" Delfino said.Ron linen, vice August Schell, a partner of VMware based on Md. Rockville ,, said that many of his customers are buying Cisco Nexus 9000 Series switches and running NSX in them instead of ACI.

"Cisco 9000 switch is a great product that is a reasonable price for Cisco gear," said Lino, whose company was also a partner of Nicira, SDN startup acquired VMware in 2012 and became NSX.NSX comes with "micro-segmentation" within VMware to network security is provided by the traffic control "East-West" between servers in a data center. This is another great advantage for VMware, as Delfino.
"NSX actually offers more investment protection for infrastructure of what it does, if they decide to switch to alternative technologies exist," said Delfino.Cisco, of course, has a different opinion. CEO Chuck Robbins, in an interview with CRN last month, said the ACI is best for businesses because it can scale beyond the data center and the rest of the network.
"In fact, we can put in ICA, we are able to implement it, can lead to scale and do not believe that VMware has been shown to have that ability," said Robbins CRN.

Although Cisco VMware NSX front ACI has become a kind of religious debate, most industry observers believe that there will be plenty of space in the global market SDN both do well with technology.That said, some of the partners working with VMware and Cisco believe NSX has the advantage at this stage of the game which is not surprising because VMware was the first to bring its product to market.

"I'm pretty sure that VMware can produce a number of large customers NSX scale production run in the data center. I'm not positive how Cisco could produce so much," said a solution provider executive who works with suppliers, who He declined to be identified.Dolphin, which will reach its first anniversary of VMware at the end of the month, told RCN that is based on the ability of VMware NSX to continue to build a force in SDN.

"A major attraction of VMware is that the culture is very, very targeted engineering," said Delfino. "When you work in sales, or working in systems engineering, the end of the day, you must go to the market on the back of the product."You can only do sound so great from a marketing perspective or from a marketing perspective, but does not work so great as it seems, is not receiving any adoption," said Delfino.

Even VMware Finds Reaching 100% Virtualization a Challenge

Virtualization has been a true facilitator in enterprise data centers. Server virtualization has brought savings in the form of a reduced space and increased efficiency of the physical server, with low fuel consumption. It also slowed down the time to market for the development and deployment of applications.

Virtualization is the foundation for cloud computing. Organizations looking for a day migrate all your data center to the cloud-based resources to reach the goal of 100% virtualization.
During VMworld 2015, VMware two engineers discuss the challenges with up to 100% virtualization. I will summarize its findings.

Non-technical Factors:

Before jumping to the technical difficulties to achieve 100% virtualization in a data center, it is appropriate to recognize non-technical challenges. These challenges have not been addressed in the framework of the session of VMworld.

Business drivers such as the licensing of software prohibited costs may prevent some workloads to be virtualized. For example, some software company charges a licensing fee based on the number of steps in a group of virtualization. Therefore, if you have a cluster of 32 nodes with 4-socket node, you will be charged fees for 128 basins.

Another technique driver may not be the size of the workload. An application requires the same amount of computing resources as their VM Host largest, would be prohibitively expensive to virtualize the application. For example, a large database server consumes 96 GB of RAM, and increased VM Host has 96 GB of physical RAM. The benefits of virtualization can not exceed the cost of adding a hypervisor overload the workload.

The last obstacle is not technical policy issues surrounding the mission-critical applications. Even in the current climate, there is a perception by some that mission-critical applications require hardware implementations bare metal.

Sharpen your Environment:

VMware vSphere says he's fine tuned for workloads generalized; It 'been my experience that this is more or less true. Therefore, if a customer is experiencing poor performance in a virtualized workload, the first place to look is the development of two hosts and virtual machine hosts. A common configuration errors is the subsystem I / O engineers must first look at the storage and network settings on both the VM Host and the guest operating system.
Always follow the best practices for configuring host I / O Some of the best practices of VMware, along with some of my, are:

• make sure the driver is used vmxnet3 VM guest;
• install the latest version of VMware Tools;
• disable unnecessary services;
• Virus Protection Harnessing the whole series against individual VM based; is
• secure storage multi-path is set up and working.

While these tips will go a long way for most workloads, more complex systems require advanced optimizations. The typical workloads that are performance problems when virtualized include high performance computing (HPC) applications and large data.

Virtualization Tax:

It would be unrealistic to think that the abstraction that allows the benefits of virtualization does not have a cost. The hypervisor adds a layer of latency for each operation of CPU and I / S. The stronger the performance of the application requires more impact on latency.

VMware has provided advanced optimizations that reduce the impact of this hypervisor overheads; these tools have improved in all versions of vSphere. Most of the optimizations have come in the form of exposing the physical subsystems for guest operating systems.
Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) is a generic term to facilitate access to physical hardware directly to a virtual machine. VMware offers three types of access technologies RDMA:

• DirectPath E / S (supported in vSphere 4.0 and higher);
• SR-IOV (supported in vSphere 5.1 and higher); is
• vRDMA (expected in vSphere 6.0 Update 1).
I will give an example of one of the three optimizations. DirectPath E / S takes advantage of
virtualization extensions Intel VT-d and AMD-Vi. DirectPath E / S network allows direct access to the network interface card to a server (NIC). Direct access means that the VM can take advantage of the advanced features of high-end package downloads NIC. In a test of performance, VMware has shown that a high-traffic web server could accommodate 15% more users per CPU to allow DirectPath front of a virtual network adapter traditional.

However, these optimizations have direct access costs. Activation DirectPath E / S for the network to a virtual machine off the advanced features such as vSphere vMotion. VMware is working on technologies that allow direct hardware access without sacrificing features.

Conclusion:

Workloads may question the desire to achieve 100% virtualization within the data center. While VMware has closed the gap in the most demanding workloads, it may still be impractical to virtualize some workloads.
