VMware Unveils New edge Computing Solutions To Bolster Enterprise oT Efforts

VMware continued its Internet of Things (IoT) project at Mobile World Congress on Wednesday, presenting a series of new state-of-the-art IT solutions that address use cases in asset management and tracking.

The solutions are developed through industry partnerships with companies such as Axis Communications, Wipro Limited and more, according to a press release. By focusing on advanced computing, VMware solutions could help business users leverage data created by IoT implementations in a secure and efficient way.

On the VMware side, products such as the VMware vSAN hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) software, VMware vSphere, and the VMware Pulse IoT Center will play a role in the new solutions, the statement said. At this stage, the solutions will address specific needs in the manufacturing and manufacturing sectors, as well as in some physical stores.

By 2022, as a result of digital commercial projects, 75% of the data generated by the company will be created and processed outside the traditional centralized data center or in the cloud, which represents an increase of less than 10% "according to Gartner data. cited in the VMware press release.

https://www.grades4sure.com/vendor/VMwareIoT implementations, especially those performed in the field, often require the kind of on-site analysis that can not be done with a traditional data center that may be kilometers away. As a result, business owners and IT managers need to find ways to treat analytics locally, while considering security and compliance requirements.

In general, three specific solutions have been announced. For starters, VMware is working on a way to bring hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) to the limit. Using VMware Pulse IoT Center and HCI tools, this solution will provide real-time analysis at the limit of sensor data collected by IoT devices, according to the statement. The company works with industry partners to provide third-party test kits, but did not mention the companies involved.

In partnership with Axis Communications and Dell EMC, VMware is working on an intelligent monitoring product based on IoT. Axis will provide the hardware (IP cameras, routers) and Dell EMC will handle the calculations via the Dell EMC or Dell Edge Gateways, according to the release. The solution will be managed through the VMware Pulse IoT Center.

"In addition, VMware is working with financial services organizations to develop the modern bank of the future using monitoring to optimize security and the customer experience," the release said.

With Wipro Limited, VMware will also launch an asset tracking tool for manufacturers. Wipro's Looking Glass asset management platform will be integrated with VMware's IoT Edge solutions for asset and data tracking and predictive failure analysis.

"The benefits of improving the efficiency and productivity of machines and other assets throughout the plant have the potential to generate significant benefits for manufacturers," the statement said.

VMware also spent about $ 6 million on advanced computer research with the National Science Foundation (NSF) of the CMM.

STOP! It's Dangerous To Upgrade To VMware 6.5 Alone. Read This

Recently, on a customer site, we had to investigate why the upgrade from VMware vSphere 6.0 to 6.5 failed because the normally solid environment was a little sick, to say the least.

The conversation on the site has performed something like:

"It's finish."

"Hold on ..."

"It's low."

"Web services say, 'No'".

PSC Cue restarts, vCenter restarts and measures more and more desperately. The service limped like a frog on one leg with a hangover. It was one of those questions where no one really understood why. It was a simple update, right? VMware support has been compromised. Even the level 3 support was a little insecure and he threw a lot of "WTF". Finally, the entire story was canceled when the administrator in question was asked about how he had updated.

I had updated the environment without first updating the PSC, essentially pulling the security base down while it was running. It took several days of VMware to fix it. Meanwhile, scarcity varied. Some people can do the work, so no.

The software is becoming more and more complex to provide new experiences, doubly for the cloud. Unfortunately, the complexity also makes upgrades a little more difficult. As a VMware administrator and well versed in VMware, I thought it was time to talk and help those behind the curve to understand the process of upgrading to VMware 6.5 world, which sings, dances and offers PSC. I hope this will also serve as a template for updating the VMware infrastructure.

With version 5.5 of vSphere came PSC or Platform Services Controller. PSC allows you to link many vCenters without many limitations of previous versions (ie, bound mode).

One of the key tasks of the PSC function is to act as a reverse proxy and SSO (Single Sign-On) infrastructure for vSphere authentication. Everything under a single piece of glass. As a note, all this refers to version 5.5. If for some crazy reason you run more than 5.5, it means that:

Few of this applies to you (a different style of PSC has been installed at this point, in the past)
Seriously, you have to update. Specter / Meltdown patches only go back up to 5.5 for a
Expect to pay a large amount of money for upgrade licenses
By default, vSphere 6.5 has its own local authentication system to manage the vSphere environment and is hosted on the PSC, but it can (and almost always) be replaced by the upcoming Active Directory integration. The PSC can handle multiple authentication systems and is compatible with all commonly used systems (AD, LDAP, local account). VMware did not put the PSC just for fun. It is a modern and extensible authentication system, and should be treated as such. It provides a key element of your cloud support infrastructure. Before the administrator tries to update, the PSC update must be handled with care.

Administrators with only one site can stop reading now because they have reduced complexity by having only one PSC. This means that the update becomes simple and that the update scenario is included in the immediate update.

For the rest of us, that's what you should do.
