VMware vSphere 6.5, VSAN Among Hottest Topics in 2016
The updates have given a boost to many existing VMware products like vSphere and VSAN, and have helped to clear the doubts since the beginning of the year.
Another year has come and gone in the world of technology, and it has been a very eventful event for some of VMware's best products. Obviously, closing a Dell-EMC deal in September 2016 attracted a lot of attention, but there was a lot more to occur for the software company.
There was a lot of news in the main VMware products, including the Workstation and Fusion updates, as well as a new version of vSphere. VMware has really focused on the NSX and clearly with the VMware Cloud Foundation and Cross-Cloud architecture ads.
VMware vSphere 6.5 has made some welcome changes, such as an HTML5 client and a new version of virtual volumes. VRealize Log Insight has made its debut new features, while the Photon platform and its three parts have attracted the interest of users.
Here is a look at the most talked about and influential products related to VMware in 2016.
VSphere:
The rumors began at the beginning of the year that vSphere 6.5 would be the next version of VMware's flagship software. The rumors were correct on version 6.5, but not VMware launched until VMworld Europe.
VSPHERE revenues have declined over the past year, leading some to believe that VMware's growth is deteriorating. The company has focused heavily on its flagship product for a long time, in order to fall into a certain constant income.
However, given that VMware vSphere 6.5 has been released, new features show that VMware is dedicated to its flagship product, despite the recent decline in revenues. VMware vCenter added a failover function and a two-node failover cluster for the vCenter Server Appliance. Users also received unexpected changes in High Availability and Distributed Resource Scheduler.
VMware Virtual SAN:
Updated VMware Virtual SAN (VSAN), one of its major products, twice in the last calendar year. 6.2 VSAN debuted in the first half of the year, while VSAN 6.5 was announced at VMworld Europe.
6.2 VSAN contributed to advance the product to the forefront of storage markets and hyper convergence defined by the software. While other features of this VSAN 6.2 VSAN have achieved the same level as some of the 6.5 VSAN continues pushing competition making it easier to use in remote locations and use flash on all nodes.
These new features have expanded the market and made it a viable option for a new set of workloads. Instead of a three-node requirement, 6.5 VSAN can be activated in remote locations without the need for 10 Gigabit Ethernet connection. There were some problems. Despite saying that exist at VMworld 2016, VMware did not include data encryption at rest or VSAN analysis in cloud 6.5.
VSphere Integrated Containers:
Although VMware was a bit late for the container group, the company took steps to catch up. VMware vSphere Containers integrated away from a Docker-centric approach, partly due to constant changes at the end of Docker causing integration problems. VIC became generally available in late 2016.
Two new features announced at VMworld 2016 - Admiral and Puerto - Integrated vSphere Containers have given a boost. Admiral is a web interface to manage containers, such as Control Plane Docker Universal. Port is a private container record that provides a safe place for users to keep images of containers, similar to the Trusted Docker Registry.
Virtual volumes:
There was a lot to digest when vSphere 6.5 finally made its debut at VMworld Europe, including a handful of new features. An ad that was somewhat under the radar was 2.0 virtual volumes (VVOLs).
The VVOL allows administrators to apply storage virtual machine policies to define performance and service level as duplication and deduplication.
The most important point of sale for VVOLs 2.0 is the native support for bay-based replication. This feature was missing in the first release of the product and many users were thrilled to see that was included in this update. This feature allows administrators to replicate virtual machines individually or in groups.
Best of the rest:
Workstation and Fusion received an update in 2016. Workstation is one of the oldest VMware products, while Fusion is approaching its 10th anniversary. Workstation Pro 12 offers new options for integration with VMware enterprise products, such as vCloud and vSphere Air, making it comparable to cheaper and free offers.

EMC World: VMware CEO Gelsinger Absent From Conference Stage
